Ultium Cells Begins Steel Construction in Lansing

  • $2.6B investment that will create 1,700 new high-tech jobs
  • Plant will span 2.8 million-square-feet and support annual capacity of 50GWh

LANSING, Mich. – Today Ultium Cells celebrates the beginning of steel construction at its third battery cell manufacturing facility in the U.S. Since May, Ultium Cells has broken ground and poured concrete footings at its new Lansing, Michigan site. Steel construction on the 2.8 million-square-foot facility will continue into Spring of 2023. Once fully operational, the plant will create 1,700 new high-tech jobs to support the production of battery cells for GM’s Ultium Platform-based EVs, including the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV.

“We are pleased construction is progressing safely and on schedule,” said Ultium Cells President Kee Eun. “Ultium Cells remains focused on delivering quality and safety with maximum efficiency as we build our foundation here in Lansing. We are grateful for the continued support from our construction partners, the greater Lansing community and the State of Michigan.”

The state-of-the-art Lansing facility will use the most advanced and sustainable battery cell manufacturing processes. The plant will be extremely flexible and able to adapt to ongoing advances in technology and materials.

“This is an important milestone as we look forward to building our business and team with the greater Lansing community,” said Ultium Cells Lansing Plant Director Grace Griffin. “This facility represents an investment in education, community involvement, career training and infrastructure as we propel towards a more sustainable future together. We are grateful for the continued support provided from our community partners to get to this point and we aim to strengthen and fortify these relationships to create positive outcomes for the lives that we touch through our work.”

Job seekers interested in high-tech careers in battery cell manufacturing can apply for open positions on the Ultium Cells website.
